Flu Season Still Active in Perth County

Perth County has had 25 confirmed cases of influenza A and 20 cases of influenza B this season.

PERTH COUNTY - The Perth County Health Unit is reminding residents that the flu is still present in Perth County, although their have been signs that it is waning.

Perth County has had 25 confirmed cases of influenza A and 20 cases of influenza B this season. However many people who are sick do not see a doctor or get tested, so their is no way of knowing how man people actually contracted the flu this season.

Public Health Nurse Lorna Askes says the positive news is they are seeing signs that the flu season is starting to slow down.

"In the last couple of weeks, the number of new lab-confirmed cases of influenza being reported to us has slowed down but it’s still important to remind people that influenza is a serious illness – much worse than the average cold.” Every year, about 2,000 people die in Canada from influenza or its complications."

She adds the best way to stop the spread of the flu is to stay home when you are sick.

"Staying home will help stop the spread of the flu to people who may be more susceptible to complications,” says Askes. Ill people are especially urged to avoid visiting long-term care homes or hospitals until they are well again."

To help stay healthy, the Health Unit advises all residents to take these simple precautions:

- Get a flu shot

- Wash your hands thoroughly and often

- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve

- Keep surfaces and items disinfected

- Stay home if you are sick
