An astounding $141,000 was raised this year at the Handbags for Hospice event for VON Sakura House
WOODSTOCK - Handbags for Hospice was a smashing success this year.
Director with the VON Oxford Community Corporation and owner of a local Tim Horton's Leslie Farell and Fund Development Coordinator Kyra McNamara were on the Heart FM morning show today to talk about how much money they received.
"All the money goes to the operating budget of the house, so in one night we raised a quarter of the operating budget of that house, so the grand total from the event was $141,861.78.
Farell says they are really proud to live in a community that comes out and shows their support like this.
"We are very proud that we can do this every year, our goal was $120,000 and to hit over $140,000 and year one our goal was to raise over $20,000 on one night, where we've come and where we are today, we are extremely proud of what our community can do and what the power of the purse really is."
McNamara says the money really does go towards a great cause.
"The money from our special events goes towards our annual operating costs, so the costs that go into running the hospice for the year. So we offer specialized palliative care in a home like setting and that is offered 24-7 and there families come and live us as well for their final days, they receive excellent care around the clock from a team of trained physicians, nurses, personal support workers and volunteers."
