A local man is feeling lucky after surviving a lightning strike inside a parked Jeep near Lake Erie.
WOODSTOCK - A woman from Woodstock is thanking her lucky stars after her jeep was hit by lightning with a friend inside.
The bolt hit the vehicle on Monday night at the Hickory Grove Family Campground on Lake Erie. Local Rotarian Sylvie Morin explains what happened.
"My Jeep was parked across the gravel road from the trailer and I'm looking right at my friend who was going to the Jeep. As soon as he closed the door, the whole thing just lights up, a big blue spark or flash, the whole Jeep just lit up and I thought, wow, I think he's just cooked, literally, pun intended I suppose, it's not a funny thing to talk about but in hindsight, I'm just like wow, did that just happen right in front of my eyes."
Morin says her friend was shaken up but fine, however the Jeep wouldn't start and is still at the campground.
"All of a sudden we see him running back to the trailer and of course his ticker is going a hundred miles an hour as he experienced his own version of trauma there. I remember thinking, is he really standing there in front of me because after what I just saw, I don't think this is really happening, so I took a little bit of a moment or two to realize that he looked like he was ok. All he could talk about is how the Jeep wouldn't start, it's cooked, I mean there was nothing it was fried."
Morin says they were able to get a ride home to Woodstock from friends who were staying at the campground. She has talked to her insurance and they are working on a plan to get the Jeep into a shop and see if it can be fixed.
She says the whole experience was surreal and she is thankful nobody was hurt.
