MPP Tables Bill for Free Contraception

Jennie Stevens says it'll help the vulnerable

St. Catharines MPP hoping her bill to provide free contraception in Ontario will be passed at Queen's Park.

Jennie Stevens tabled the motion for International Women's Day, and it'll be debated on Wednesday.

She says British Columbia is already doing it.  "With significant reductions in unintended pregnancies.  We would have less visits to hospitals.  It also helps with the inter-partner violence issue, where unwanted pregnancies are there."

She says it's not only about gender equality, but it'll help vulnerable populations when faced with unplanned pregnancy.

"It isn't just a health care investment, but a financial one too, with potential savings of $27-million annually, starting from the 4th year."

She's anticipating widespread support at the Ontario legislature.
