National Victims and Survivors Week in Oxford County

It's time to listen deeply and amplify the voices of victims and survivors in Oxford County.

OXFORD COUNTY - Victims Assistance Services of Oxford County (VASOC) is shining a light on National Victims and Survivors Week.

Executive Director Kate Peters says it officially kicked off on Sunday May 11th and its set to wrap up on Saturday May 17th.

"National Victims and Survivors Week is a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and courage of those affected by crime. It’s a time to listen deeply, to amplify the voices of victims and survivors, and to renew our commitment to building safer, more compassionate communities. "

The theme is The Power of Collaboration, so VASOC has introduced an the Power of Collaboration Award of Excellence along with the nine recipients. You can find the complete list below:

- Woodstock Police Service

- Oxford County OPP

- Operation Sharing

- Domestic Abuse Services Oxford and Ingamo Homes

- Oxford County Community Health Centre

- Children's Aid Society of Oxford County

- Welkin Child and Youth Mental Wellness

- Unifor Local 636

- Beachville Firefighters Association

Peters says these organizations have worked in partnership with VASOC through advocacy, crisis response, mental health care, trauma-informed services, grassroots action, and financial support.

"No one can do this work alone. These awardees demonstrate the power of what’s possible when communities come together with compassion and purpose. Their efforts reflect a shared commitment to dignity, justice, and healing - values at the very heart of National Victims and Survivors Week."

In honour of National Victims and Survivors Week, Peters says we should have an open ear to those willing to tell their story and also research the resources we have here in Oxford County.

"This week, I encourage each of us to pause and reflect on the voices and experiences of survivors. Learn about the support systems in your community. Reach out, whether for yourself or someone else. Together, we can create safer, more supportive spaces for every person impacted by crime. Together, we can build communities rooted in care, connection, and justice."
