A new law means drivers need to be a little more patient at pedestrian crossings
New laws are now in place for pedestrians and motorists.
In an attempt to keep pedestrians safe when crossing the street, motorists will have to wait at a little longer at school crossing and crossovers. OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik explains the new regulations that are now in effect. "The cross walks that have lights, or if it is a school crossing zone that has a crossing guard - the new law makes sure that the drivers have to wait until pedestrians have completely stepped off or are completely crossed and are off the roadway. The reason that they have done this is to make it safer for all of the pedestrians, for all of the school kids, and all crossing guards that are working those intersections." According to Narancsik this will force motorists to be more alert when driving through an intersection.
Constable Narancsik warns if you disobey the law be prepared to face the consequences. "There are fines that could be up to $500. The fines they go between $150-500. The fines are for the motorists, because the motorists need to make sure that they are stopping while the people are obeying and crossing with the light signals or with the crossing guards."
The new laws came into effect on January 1st and Constable Narancsik says this will make the roads a safer place for pedestrians. "Make sure that the people driving the vehicles are paying attention and we want the pedestrians to make sure they are following in crossing with the crossing guards or crossing with the light signals. For the drivers even though you may have a green light to make that turn, or to go you have to make sure that the pedestrians are completely off the roadway before you move forward."
