Roads are snow packed, slushy and icy heading out this morning. That's thanks to the first winter storm that moved into our region Wednesday afternoon, and is moving out this morning. It's left a dumping of 10-20 cms of snow across southern Ontario. It caused a few issues on the roads, including a multi-vehicle pile-up on the 401 at Putnam around dusk, and also caused an overnight closure on the 403 in the Brantford area. But as of this morning, all roads in Oxford County are open, and the 401 and 403 are moving well, despite snowy and slushy conditions. As you head out on the roads this morning, Woodstock Police Sargent Neil Butler says drivers need to slow down and pay attention to what's going on infront of you. "Increase following distances, with speeds that are appropriate for the conditions. And as always, avoid distracted driving, such as using cell phones, texting and that sort of thing is compounded with the bad weather." Butler adds one other common problem police see after a snowfall. "Before setting off you should spend time warming your car up, clearing off the windows and making sure you can see out of your car. One of our pet peeves is people that drive along with snow on the roofs and hoods of your car, which causes a visual distraction for other drivers." City police are also sending out a reminder of the overnight parking ban that is in place in Woodstock. You're not allowed to park on the side of city streets during the overnight hours to allow snowplow operators to clear the roads effectively and efficiently. A similar ban is in place in Tillsonburg and Ingersoll.
