A portion of a woodlot in Woodstock will be cleared to make room for a subdivision extension.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council discussed the fate of a local wood lot in the face of a subdivision extension.
A development company looking to spread out further will be destroying part of the woodlot located near Arthur Parker Ave to build their extension.
Sandra Talbot was one of the councillors speaking against the destruction of the woodlot.
"It's like Central Park; you have all these buildings and this beautiful green area. I just thought how unfortunate for the residents in this area, they can't enjoy or even look at this beautiful woods because they have no mature trees in their neighbourhoods right at the moment and it takes a long time for a tree to grow."
But in the end, the construction of the subdivision extension will still take place Talbot says.
"We have nothing in place to stop it. The subdivision plan has been in place for quite a few years now when it was laid out and a lot of thought and process went into it. Unless things are significant in the ministry's eyes it's very hard to stop it unless we specifically had said during the subdivision planning part."
Some residents from the area who are against the subdivision extension also attended the meeting.
"I don't think you should ever be afraid to come out and voice your opinion and concerns," Talbot says. "I give the people a lot of credit tonight and on Monday night for coming out to the planning meeting and expressing it because it really brings attention to things that we don't always see and when you go out and see it then you understand."
