People have been known to step off the sidewalk into live traffic which could cause a collision or worse, a fatality.
It's a sign of the times that we even have to provide this warning, but our local OPP are reminding everyone not to text and walk.
Texting and walking puts everyone's safety at risk and has led to serious injuries in the past. All to often we see people walking down the street with their eyes on their phone instead of what is in front of them. This can lead to funny incidents like someone walking into a telephone pole and tragic incidents involving more serious collisions.
Even if you text and walk while on the sidewalk, people still run into things, including other pedestrians. People have also been known to step off the sidewalk into live traffic which could cause a collision or worse, a fatality.
Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander Joseph Varga says this is all about safety.
"The OPP are urging everyone to keep their cellular phone and other electronic devices in their pocket while crossing the street in order to keep their attention focused on their surroundings. Safety doesn't happen by accident and it certainly does not take a holiday."
