The fee is expected to be temporary and not permanent and is because of the fuel shortages with the conflict happening in the Middle East.
CANADA - WestJet is implementing a new fee due to the rise of fuel prices.
The fee will be $60, which will be on companion voucher bookings. The fee is apart of the WestJet RBC Mastercard Rewards program. In an email to flyers, WestJet said that the surcharge is a temporary measure until jet fuel prices "return to normal levels."
Although no U.S. carriers have added any surcharges, United Airlines and JetBlue did raise some fees for checked bags last week, however, these charges are permanent.
The airline added that base fares can be adjusted more flexibly, but companion vouchers do not allow for pricing changes which is where the surcharge was targeted.
The fuel surcharge comes in wake of the conflict in the Middle East. With the charge being in effect starting Wednesday, with voucher bookings completed beforehand not being affected.
