Many in the Friendly City continue yo drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are not thrilled with the results of the RIDE programs conducted during the holiday season.
Although intoxicated driving charges were not laid during many of the RIDEs, Constable VanLeeuwen says even having to give roadside tests is disheartening. "From a police stand point we're disappointed if we have to give any roadsides so as far as police are concerned I'd say that we're disappointed that people have been arrested for impaired or travelling with alcohol in their car or have consumed - in our opinion - probably more than they should have consumed and they're still operating a motor vehicle." At the latest RIDE check four road side tests were administered after stopping 625 cars.
For the most part though, it does seem like the message is sinking in for many people in the Friendly City according to VanLeeuwen. "I would say that comparing even to last year the occurrences are a bit better than they were. Though we do still have people who over consumed and made some bad decisions and ended up being arrested either for their safety or the one incident where the one gentleman decided he wanted to be physical and assault police."
