Cold Spring Farms hands out $20,000 in grants to three community organizations
THAMESFORD - Three local organizations are reaping the benefits of the Cold Spring Farms Endowment Fund.
The Thamesford plant donated $20,000 Thursday to three eligible grant applicants as selected by their Donor Advisory Committee.
The funds are part of an endowment fund to honour Harvey and Erma Beaty, the founders of Cold Spring Farms. The fund is targeted at food related grants, usually capital in nature and supporting those in our community who are struggling financially.
Ingersoll's Fusion Youth Centre received $17,500 of the funds and Manager of the Fusion Youth Centre Jason Smith says in 2013 they received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to put in a commercial kitchen at their facility.
"We wanted to leverage other dollars to do other things so we leveraged these funds to put in a youth patio, cafe area and to look at expanding some of our nutrition programs. These dollars are going right towards feeding the kids that come to our centre and we are looking at hosting a couple of extra meals every year."
CEO of Habitat for Humanity Heartland Jeff Duncan says they really appreciate the more than 28 hundred dollar donation they received.
"The money is going to be dedicated to our third and forth build in Oxford County for homes for families. It's going to go to putting the bathrooms in two homes we are going to be building in Woodstock in the next few weeks we are starting."
The Tillsonburg Senior Centre also received $1,150 and Program Coordinator Karen Rohrer says the money will go toward hosting a series of cooking workshops for seniors.
"Our first workshop will be for brain food, foods that we can take to help prevent dementia. We have different topics; grocery store tour, eating gluten free, for heart disease, Heart and Stroke, diabetes, we have quite a variety."
All of the grants were given out on an 'ask' basis.
