A huge milestone for Toyota, and its workers today. The company saw it's 5-millionth car to be built in Canada, roll off the assembly line. It was a red LexusRX350 in Cambridge. (In Photo) It was a fitting location, as Toyota Cambridge is the original starting point for the company in building cars in Canada. When it opened in 1988, it had the capacity to build just 50,000 vehicles a year. Now, between the Woodstock and Cambridge plants, Toyota has the capacity to crank out 500,000 vehicles a year. They say it took them 11-years to build its first million vehicles. They say with combined Woodstock and Cambridge production, they can now build a million vehicles in just 2-years. Likewise, employment has risen from 1000 to 6000 over those 26-years. In a press release, TMMC also notes it has earned 11 J.D. Power and Associates Quality Plant Awards, and has been named as one of Canada?s Top 100 Employers for nine consecutive years.
