Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock and District issue challenge to the community
WOODSTOCK - All it takes is one hour a week to change the lives of children in our community.
That's the message being sent out by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock and District as part of their 50/50 Challenge which aims to match 50 volunteers to kids on their waiting lists.
Group Program and Volunteer Coordinator James Rijneveld says most of the kids come from non-traditional homes without the mentors that many of us grew up with.
"It's life changing just to know you're doing good and to see in the kid's eyes that they feel for the first time, in a lot of cases, that someone actually cares about them. Someone wants the best for these kids and that changes you as a volunteer for sure."
"I know that each of these kids should have the chance to have a mentor and have the feeling that someone actually cares about them, someone wants to spend time with them and someone really wants the best for these kids so I challenge Woodstock to come together and help us reach this goal and help us really help out these kids."
Mentors do a wide variety of activities with their 'Littles' including fishing, hiking, crafts or even cooking. He says there are free group based activities available throughout the community as well.
Rijneveld says the number one thing they look for in volunteers is the ability to have fun.
