The Norwich Community Centre is closed today because of a Smash and Grab ATM theft. They plan to open back up at 4:00 p.m.
NORWICH - The Norwich Community Centre is the latest victim of the Smash and Grab ATM theft.
Someone stole a pickup truck last night and used it to break into the community centre to steal the bank machine. Director of Community Development Services Patrick Hovorka says damage to the community centre is significant.
"We have a lot of glass doors, those sliding glass doors and they absolutely smashed right through them, so we have piles of broken glass, door framing, there has been some peripheral damage to different doors and walls."
Hovorka says they do have a cost estimate on the damage at this time, however the damage to the Centre was significant.
"Put it this way the damage far out weighs what they would have gained from the cash in that bank machine and it is not even close. So for a couple of thousand dollars, we have sustained thousands and thousands of dollars in damage, it just doesn't make sense."
Hovorka says the community is going to be upset when they find out what happened.
"We are lucky in the sense that we can still operate, we are supposed to be facilitating a small hockey jamboree for IP players, you know the little players this weekend and that is at the same time that Emily Stowe is hosting their silent auction at the centre and that always attracts 500 to 600 people, that is a big fundraiser for that school. Now that being said we are still going to be able to have that, thank god, right, thank god that things are still going to go forth but yeah when stuff like this happens it can devastate a community on so many different levels."
The Community Centre will be closed today until 4:00 p.m., however they plant to open up tonight and no team will miss ice time because of this.
