A rally is being planned in Woodstock after one local woman looks to raise awareness for autism, after the provincial government's recent changes to the Autism Program Plan.
WOODSTOCK - One local woman is organizing a rally in town to raise awareness on autism.
The event's Facebook page says the rally was setup to fight against the provincial government's Autism Program Plan, after they announced changes earlier this month.
Organizer Shawna Buck says the event is also in support of her son.
"We have been fighting since he was two years-old to get services and it went from 2012 until October 2016 before he even got his diagnosis, so many years of fighting to even get that kind of support. And then he has been sitting on the waitlist since October 16th, 2016 to even receive services for autism. He's going on nine year's old and he still has not received one thing to help him with his autism and self-regulation, and things that very crucial for him for his future to be active and a good role model and so many therapies that are needed to be able to support him future-wise."
Buck says the community has been helping her create awareness on social media, with friends, family and Oxford NDP sharing the event.
She says she hopes the rally can raise awareness for autism and mental health.
"I hope that an event like this can start bringing awareness not just to autism but to mental health in a whole because if people are not getting the services and things that they need that are most crucial now, especially when they're young and developing and most need it, where's their future going to be?"
The rally is scheduled to be outside the MPP office in Woodstock.
The event will happen on March 2nd, beginning at 1:00pm.
