Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, and area has a lot to celebrate with their 40th anniversary.
INGERSOLL/TILLSONBURG - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, and area has a lot to celebrate.
"We're been incorporated since 1975 with the Big Brothers agency in Ingersoll," says Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, and Area Deb Landon. "And then throughout the years with the evolution of Big Sisters of Ingersoll and then the merger into Tillsonburg with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tillsonburg. So from 1975 to 2015 we're celebrating 40 years. Our reunion will be hosted at the Elm Hurst Inn Carriage House on Saturday June 20th from 1 to 4 p.m."
The celebration will include refreshments, photos and memorabilia from times gone by, and presentations by past members. They will also be building a time capsule that will be opened in another 10 years when the organization reaches the 50 year mark.
The reunion will be a drop in style, but they do ask that you RSVP by calling Big Brothers Big Sisters at 519-485-1801 or 519-842-9008 ext 229, or email at ingtburg@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca
"It's pretty amazing because as we're going back looking at numbers - how many children have we served actually in 40 years? We went back and looked at our old files and counted them up and we've served over 17 000 children in 40 years. That's pretty amazing for two small communities," says Landon.
Over the years they have also given out money to help Little Brothers and Little Sister make it to post-secondary schools. "We have recognized 33 children since 1993 - I should say youth now. And given out 23 000 dollars and that's just from a bursary started many years ago - just the interest from that. We also have awards for young children who've overcome obstacles and our Volunteer of the Year."
