Today is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
OXFORD COUTNY - Today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. 28 years ago on December 6th, 1989, 14 girls were killed at the l'Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal. To help take action in preventing further women suffering from domestic violence, today became an official Nation Day in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada. Becoming a day to remember victims of, and those who suffer from violence and to raise awareness on women abuse.
OPP Domestic Violence Coordinator Constable, Ed Barty on why this is such an important day.
"On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, not only is it our opportunity to reflect on the lives lost, we must be cognizant that gender based violence is still ongoing for many women and children."
Barty, continued on the importance of this day and how it can hopefully prevent domestic violence towards women in the future.
"Collectively we must take action to put an end to domestic violence. We can all be part of the solution. Whether it is by taking a pledge to end domestic violence, setting a positive example for our children, supporting a victim or speaking up on this issue, we all have an important role to play to combat domestic violence in our community."
All over oxford county there is help and support for women and girls who are living in fear of violence and abuse.
