WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police handed out a couple of tickets at Pittock Park as they kicked off their annual fishing and boating initiative.
Every summer the police patrol the park with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Upper Thames Conservation Authority. The focus is to educate fisherman and boaters about safety, equipment, licenses and laws. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM they did have to issue a few tickets on Thursday. "There were two people that didn't have fishing licenses that were charged and we had one person in a vessel that didn't have a life jacket on, so that person was charged."
She says another big thing they were watching for was drinking and boating, which is the same charge as drinking and driving. Woodstock Police will be at Pittock again on the August Long Weekend with a focus on impaired drivers.
Police want to remind people who are fishing that;
" You need to carry your Outdoors card and fishing licence tag whenever you go fishing
" If you want to fish for one day you only need a one day sport fishing card
" If your primary residence is Ontario and you have lived in Ontario for 6 month during a 12 month period you require a fishing licence
" Remember to renew/replace and update your Outdoors card
" Know the catch, possession and size limits
" Know where you can fish
" Know the laws and bylaws in the area you are fishing
Police want to remind boaters that;
" Take an accredited Canadian Boating Course
" Be prepared - check weather conditions, carry marine maps, inspect all your equipment, ventilate any fumes that may accumulate
" Know what equipment is required on your vessel
" Always wear your life jacket
" Boating and drinking alcohol do not mix
