Starting in 2022, the Cambridge Toyota plant will be building the Lexus NX SUV.
CAMBRIDGE - The future of the Toyota plants in Cambridge is looking pretty bright.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Cambridge today to announce the plant will start production on a new vehicle. Starting in 2022 Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada says it will start building the Lexus NX SUV in its Cambridge plant. They will produce both a standard and hybrid version of the vehicle for the North American market.
In March Toyota announced that it would shift production of the hybrid RAV 4 from Cambridge to Georgetown, making room for the Cambridge plant to take on a new vehicle. Last year, Toyota announced a $1.4 billion dollar investment for it's two plants in Cambridge and Woodstock. That included a $110 million dollar investment from the Federal Government.
Prime Minister Trudeau says the Government is committed to creating jobs.
"One of the things we are here to announce today is our commitment to creating and protecting great jobs across this country and indeed that is something Canadians will always expect from their Government and that is certainly what we have been able to do. A key part of my job is to look out for jobs and protect Canadian jobs right across the Country."
The plant will produce both a standard and hybrid version of the vehicle to supply the North American market.
Toyota will have extra capacity at the plant after announcing in March that it would shift production of the hybrid RAV4 SUV in Cambridge to its plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Trudeau says Cambridge is place where we see the real strength of Canada's economy.
"Cambridge is a place, indeed all through Southern Ontario, where we see the real strength of Canada's economy, which is the extraordinary men and women who work so hard in manufacturing right across this region and be able to highlight that it is not just us as a Government or the people in this region who notice that, but world class companies like Toyota who recognize that."
Trudeau says this announcement today is about securing good jobs for several years in this region.
