The Canadian Auto Workers union has reached a tentative four-year deal with Ford, just hours before a midnight strike deadline. CAW president Ken Lewenza says they will ask Chrysler and GM to accept the deal as a pattern settlement. For workers, there are no wage increases during life of agreement, which lasts until Sept 2016, but each employee will receive a $2,000 lump sum payment which will cover cost of living increases. Those payments will be made in years 2, 3 and 4 of the proposed deal. Chrysler responded to the move by saying they were "very concerned'' that Ford isn't in the best position to lead negotiations because it has reduced its footprint in Canada in recent years. Part of the deal includes Ford adding 600 new jobs in Canada, mostly in Oakville. There's no doubt workers and officials at GM's CAMI Plant in Ingersoll are looking at this agreement closely. However, CAW Local 88 officials have said they're not in position right now to be making any comments while negotiations are continuing.
