A 22-year-old from Montreal was arrested and charged on Tuesday after two people reported a telephone fraud to the Oxford OPP.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Someone from Montreal has been charged in connection to a fraud investigation in Norwich Township.
According to the Oxford OPP, someone called two people pretending to be one of their family members. They said they were in trouble with the police and then handed the phone over to someone who pretended to be an RCMP officer. That individual informed them that the alleged relative was arrested for drug offenses and said they must pay $8,000 in order for them to be released.
One of the victims got the money and they were informed that the alleged RCMP officer would be stopping by their home to pick it up. After thinking it over for a while, they decided to call the OPP.
Officers arrested a 22-year-old on Tuesday and they're now facing two counts of fraud over $5,000. They remain in custody at this time, waiting for their bail hearing.
Anyone with information in regard to this investigation should call the Oxford OPP at 1-888-310-1122. You can also submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477.
