Fertilizer Canada says the CP Rail strike could have a devastating impact on the spring seeding season and it's calling on the federal government to take immediate action.
OTTAWA - More than 3,000 conductors, engineers, train and yard workers hit the picket lines over the weekend.
The work stoppage began just before midnight Saturday night and CP Rail has since shutdown it's Canadian operations.
Fertilizer Canada is calling on the federal government to take immediate action. It says the disruption during the spring seeding season could have a devastating impact on farmers, the economy, and domestic and international food security.
Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan says this work stoppage comes at the worst possible time, but there is no plan to introduce back-to-work legislation at the moment. He says the company and the union are still negotiating and the government believes the best deal is reached at the bargaining table.
