"Shanna was a part of our city...so this is a real good testament to a young lady who we lost far too soon."
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock will officially be unveiling the brand new Shanna Larsen Park.
A ceremony will happen on Friday October 7th at 1 p.m. Shanna Larsen lost her life to breast cancer when she was just 24 years old. Team Shan has been raising money and awareness about early detection in her honour ever since. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch tells Heart FM that naming the park after Larsen is pretty significant.
"This is the very first park in Woodstock named after a local woman - of course we have Victoria Park but Queen Victoria obviously never lived here."
Birtch says Larsen's family and members of Team Shan will be on hand for the ceremony.
"We will be able to celebrate all of the great work that has been coming out of their initiative to promote early detection awareness for young women. Shanna was a part of our city, she worked as a swimming instructor, and was involved in many different community programs, so this is a real good testament to a young lady who we lost far too soon."
They still have some work to do at the park on Upper Thames Street that will feature new playground equipment, including a zip line.
