Grocery Stores, Customers Team Up to Fight Hunger at Thanksgiving

It's become a Woodstock tradition. From now until Thanksgiving, two grocery stores in the city will match your donations to the Food for Friends program. It runs through Operation Sharing, and allows those going through financial hardship to shop for their own groceries with food cards, rather than taking non-perishable handouts. Once again, it's Sobey's and Foodland stores matching customer donations. Foodland Owner Chris Chapman on why they continue to support th e program. "It's traditional. Everybody growing up can remember happy Thanksgiving dinners. But if you're having a tough time of it, and you're not really able to put a lot on the plate, it's a tough time emotionally. So it's nice to have support there for them, and we really like to support this group at Thanksgiving." Over $20,000 has been raised between the grocery stores and their customers over the last 2-years. Last year (photo), Chapman, along with Sobey's Woodstock Owner Sheila Wammes, and Operation Sharing's Kathryn McKeen and Stephen Giuliano celebrated over $11,000 that was raised between the two stores.
