Halloween Fire Safety

Woodstock Fire ask residents to consider flameless LED Candles for their pumpkins to help reduce the risk of fire.

WOODSTOCK - If you're heading to a Halloween party this weekend, Woodstock Fire recommends you take a second to find an exit route should a fire break out.

Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods recommends forgoing candles when it comes to decorating.

"Decorations are the first thing to ignite in 900 reported home fires each year and two of every five of these were started by a candle so we are trying to encourage people for all special occasions, especially at Halloween to use those LED candles that don't actually use a flame."

Woods adds if you do use a candle outside, ensure there are no dried leaves of scarecrows around it as those can quickly ignite.

Woods says parents should be having fire safety conversations with their children before they send them out.

"Tell the children to stay away from open flames, make sure they know how to stop, drop and roll. Have them practice stopping right away, dropping to the ground, covering their face with their hands so they don't breathe in any smoke and roll over and over to put the fire out."

Woods also suggests children not wear long, flowy costumes are they can easily catch on fire if they are near an open flame.
