British Home Children Honoured in Tillsonburg

The Town of Tillsonburg will be honouring British Home Children with an exhibition at the Annandale Historic Site and Museum.

TILLSONBURG - Tillsonburg is honouring the legacy of British Home Children.

More than 100,000 children were sent from the United Kingdom to Canada through child migration programs between 1869 and 1948, often coming from families facing poverty or other hardships. Annandale Historic Site and Museum is putting on an exhibit, and Cultural Heritage Manager/Curator Kate Bakos explains.

"We highlight several stories of local British home children who lived, worked, raised their families and contributed to the Tillsonburg and surrounding area. So, it's kind of a way for folks to see and pull back the curtain."

Residents are encouraged to visit the exhibition through October 31st, or explore the online exhibition by clicking here. A special presentation is coming to Tillsonburg. From Hardship to Hope: The Story of the British Home Children is coming to the Annandale Historic Site and Museum tomorrow. Bakos says Lori Oschefski will be the presenter and is the President of Home Children Canada.

"Attendees will learn why children were sent from Britain, what their journeys were like, how the placements worked, and what their life was like when they arrived. So, it's kind of just giving you a more detailed view of the experience of home children."

The event is free to attend and will begin at 2 p.m.
