The weekend is coming up, so of course that means heavy rain in the forecast.
We are looking at enough rain, that the Thames River Conservation Authority has issued a safety warning. Rain is expected to start this afternoon and continue into Friday and Saturday. Current forecasts are indicating 25 to 50 mm of rain cumulatively over the next few days.
With watershed ground conditions generally saturated, runoff into waterways will be generated quickly. The UTRCA expects water levels in streams, ditches and rivers to rise to near bank full conditions with flooding in some low lying flood plain areas, similar to levels experienced earlier this spring.
While serious flooding is not anticipated, water levels will rise and remain elevated.
The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses.
