Hickson Central Public School is honouring the 100 year anniversary of the Iconic W.W.1 Canadian Poem In Flanders Fields on Thursday May 7th.
Two of the students at Hickson are actually relatives of Lt. Col. John McCrae. Their grandfather Jamie McCorkindale is Col. McCrae's cousin. Principal Deborah Wrack tells Heart FM they have been in contact with the Guelph Museum who will be helping with the ceremony. "We have been in contact with the Guelph Museum, which is loaning us an interactive display of ‘In Flanders Fields’ for the day, along with a museum staff member." She adds members of McCrae's family will be in attendance along with the Mayor of East Zorra Don McKay and the Director of Education Laura Elliott. At the ceremony students will be delivering recitations and singing and the entire school will recite the poem. They will also honour a former student Tyler Todd who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 and a tree will be planted in his honour. Local military personnel who attend the school’s Remembrance Day assembly have also been invited.
