Local health units are encouraging women to book a mammogram every two years.

The Perth District Health Unit is encouraging all women over the age of 50 to book a mammogram.

A mammogram is a special screening process that helps detect the early signs of breast cancer.

Public Health Nurse Karen Burgin-Payette says women should be screened every 2 years and early detection is key.

"A lump that you detect yourself is usually bigger than an gumball or about the size of a quarter or a loonie and waiting until that point, the options for treatment become smaller and the outcomes aren't as positive. If we can catch lumps and tumours when they are the size of a little bead or a pea, that's where we have the best success."

Women between the ages of 50 and 74 are most commonly diagnosed with the disease.

Public Health Nurse Karen Burgin-Payette says not all women remember to book a mammogram.

"It's 50 to 54 that don't necessarily start screening right away; they might start screening as they get a little older. Towards the later years, like 69 to 74 we see a gap in screening once again."

The Perth District Health Unit's Just Book It Campaign encourages women to pick up the phone and call the Ontario Breast Screening Program in order to book a screening. The phone call should only take 5 minutes and they can book you wherever you would like to get your screening done. Some of the screening location options in this area include Woodstock, Tillsonburg, Stratford, and Listowel.
