The Ontario SPCA is in the middle of their 6th annual No Hot Pets Campaign.
OXFORD COUNTY - Leave your pet at home; not in the car.
That's the message behind the Ontario SPCA's No Hot Pets Campaign this summer.
Vehicles can heat up very quickly in the summer, even if the car is parked in the shade with the windows down.
Inspector Brandon James says this could be fatal for a furry friend.
"Pet owners need to remember that dogs don't sweat like you and I. While they are sitting in a hot vehicle and the temperature starts to go up and they are unable to cool their bodies; they will eventually suffer some type of heat stress and ultimately brain damage or death."
If you spot a pup locked in someone else's car; Inspector Brandon James says you should pay attention to their behaviour.
"If it's non-responsive to your raps on the window or anybody passing certainly we're in the red zone. It's the danger zone for those pets and obviously they need to get out of that heat."
You should also try to get in contact with the owner and contact police or the OSPCA. You can learn more about the No Hot Pets Campaign online here.
James also says you shouldn't take your pets out for walks during the hottest part of the day. Hot sidewalks or asphalt can easily burn the pads of their feet.
