STRATFORD - An award winning poet from Stratford has won the International Prime Number Magazine Award for Poetry.
Heidi Sander won the award for her poem "How We Live On," which is part of her collection, The Forest of My Mind.
Sander says the poem was inspired by her late mother opens with “The wind empties its pockets of seeds while I fill mine with apples.”
"That really represents a memory that I have shared with my mom throughout the years, there is one thing we did a lot together and that was cook."
Prize judge and award-winning poet Stacy R. Nigliazzo says she was deeply touched by this piece.
"The language is fluid, impactful, and spare and the attention to sensory detail is divine. The voice is genuine and absolutely breaks my heart. I found myself haunted by it, returning again and again to the sanctuary of that sacred kitchen."
Sander says this is the first contest she has entered since she was a kid, winning a poetry award from a contest at the local Royal Canadian Legion. She is now working to get her collection published.
