A massive barn fire near Tavistock this morning has caused about $2 million dollars in damage. The good news is that firefighters were able to save about 300 pigs.
TAVISTOCK - Fire crews are still at the scene of a huge barn fire that was visible on Highway 59 between Hickson and Tavistock.
OPP and firefighters arrived on scene around 5:30 this morning at Maplewood Sideroad. 300 animals were saved from the pig farm. Estimated damage is pegged at $2 million dollars. The barn was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene.
East Zorra Tavistock Fire Chief Scott Alexander explains what happened.
"We were able to save one of the buildings to the west, that had approximately 300 sows in it. We do have some casualties, but do to the hard work of the guys, at least we have some success out of this. We will have the Office of the Fire Marshall coming in to investigate, not because we think it is suspicious, but we do have a part of the building that is still standing and we think it is an excellent learning opportunity that we can hopefully learn something from this, so we can prevent more future barn fires."
No word on how many animals died. No humans were injured in the blaze. We will provide you with more information when it becomes available. Maplewood Sideroad will be closed for some time after the fire and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
