UPDATE: Police Locate Body in Lake Erie

The Port Burwell beach was closed as officials searched for a missing swimmer.

UPDATE: (5:30 p.m.) - Police have located the body of the missing swimmer, who has been identified as a 35-year-old man from Woodstock.

UPDATE (11:50 a.m.) - In a video posted on the OPP West Region X page, Sergeant Ed Sanchuk revealed that the two swimmers were father and daughter.

He said the father saved his daughters life.

"The father recognised his daughter in distress, so he pushed his daughter to the shoreline where two good samaritans were able to rescue the young teenager. I'm sad to say that the father did not resurface above the water."

The search for the father continues at this time.

PORT BURWELL - The search is on for a missing swimmer in Lake Erie.

This comes after emergency crews responded to two swimmers in distress at Port Burwell beach at around 3:00 p.m. yesterday.

According to the Elgin OPP, one swimmer was pulled to safety but the other failed to resurface. The swimmer that was saved was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the beach is closed as the search continues for the other.

Members of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton are helping in the search.
