More Online Scams In Woodstock

Woodstock Police are hoping to help the public with scams on the rise in the new year.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are hoping to get residents aware of scams that may have targeted them in 2018 moving forward.

2 highlighted scams that are looked at today that may have effected Woodstock residence in 2018 are a Kijiji buyer scam and a phishing scam. If you had received an email or link from somewhere on the internet stating that you've won a jackpot, or large sum of cash, ignore it and click away immediately. Community Service Officer Shaylyn Jackson explains in more detail.

"It can be kind of hard to spot but that's why we encourage people to not open emails, or text messages that say you have won a valuable prize, or claim to have a picture of you click here. Because a lot of the time just clicking those links or opening the email itself can install a malicious software onto your device."

Jackson also explained the second scam that kijiji sellers need to look out for.

"Buyers will send a fraudulent check to pay for whatever you have agreed to sell. So the buyer is what their pretending to be, will send a fraudulent check that's more then the price that you've agreed on. They will then ask for you to pay the difference because they don't have an account, or something along those lines."

If you feel as though you have been a victim or feel suspicion that you've fallen for any kind of scam contact police immediately to protect yourself and others.
