Woodstock's Jake Muzzin chatted with Heart FM about his new contract extension and current injury.
Woodstock's Jake Muzzin will call Los Angeles home for another five years.
The LA Kings defenceman inked a five year, $20-million dollar contract this week after what he says was about a month of negotiations.
In speaking with Heart FM from his LA home Thursday morning, the 6' 3", 25 year-old says he's looking forward to concentrating on the game now that an agreement has been reached. "I'm really excited. LA is a place I enjoy playing, we have a great group of guys, we have a successful team and it's a great place to play overall. To get a deal done was exciting for me and now I can just focus on playing hockey."
Muzzin's two year, $2-million dollar contract was set to expire at the end of the 2014-15 season but this new deal will see him sporting the number 6 in LA until the 2019-20 season. "We came to an agreement, it's a fair deal for both sides and it's exciting. They showed that they wanted to get me locked up early and I wanted to stay here and be locked up for five years. To come to an agreement and get it out of the way is huge."
In the 2013-14 season, Muzzin netted 24 points with 5 goals and 19 assists with an additional 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) during the Kings' 26 games he played on the road to their Stanley Cup Championship. And according to the LA King Insider, Muzzin also lead the league in Corsi.
Muzzin has been sidelined for the start of the 2014-15 season due to an upper-body injury he sustained during exhibition play in Colorado. Although a return date is not determined, Muzzin hopes it will be in the very near future. "I could probably play right now but if something were to happen it could be worse and I could be out a couple of months. So, we have to let it heal and it's getting close. I'm hoping to be back within a week or so here, I don't really know I have to wait and see what the doctor says but that's my feeling."
Muzzin celebrated his Stanley Cup championship with the Friendly City on Sunday July 27th and does call Woodstock home during the off-season.
