Nelson ran 55 hours over three days and was the last woman in the world standing in the competition.
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock native was the last woman standing in the world at the Backyard Ultra World Championships in British Columbia.
Amanda Nelson has returned to the Friendly City after representing Canada from Saturday to Monday.
Nelson qualified for the World Championships by winning the Persistence Backyard Ultra over the summer, running 33 yards (221 kilometres). That win put her in the top 15 nationwide.
At the Backyard Ultra, Nelson broke the Canadian women's record for most yards, running 55 hours over three days. For reference, that is a mind-blowing 369 kilometres, which is equivalent to running 8.7 marathons.
Nelson explains how she felt when she found out she was the only woman left in the competition in the world.
"I was shocked. It was crazy... I still haven't really processed it."
37 countries competed in the Backyard Ultra, and Canada finished in sixth place. Nelson was the third-highest-scoring Canadian.
