A local author hopes he can help others who may be suffering in silence with bipolar disorder.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock author Eric Schmiedl hopes to dispel some of the stigma around bipolar disorder through his new book 'Don Quixote Versus the Devil'.
Schmiedl says it's about his trials and tribulations through bipolar disorder.
"I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in '98 but actually my first episode was in '87 when I was 20 years old. It kind of goes on about what I went through and some of the mistakes I made along the way and what I did or what I've done in the more recent past to stay healthy."
"There's two main pillars to my health living right now," continues Schmiedl. "I'd say that would be getting enough sleep and also staying to a medication regiment and staying to the medications as prescribed and hopefully people who are maybe new to the illness or just diagnosed can take those steps and stay healthy themselves."
Director of Crisis, Outreach and Specialized Services and Oxford Canadian Mental Health, Lynn Wardell says the book will be invaluable for families supporting a family member with a mental illness as it will provide for some understanding of what their family member may be experiencing and offers a perspective that only a person who is experiencing a mental illness can truly identify with.
There are a pair of book signing scheduled for next month. The first is at the Oxford CMHA/Self Help building at 522 Peel St., Woodstock on Thursday, November 13 from 2:30-4 p.m. Another book signing is scheduled at the Merrifield Book Shop at 471 Dundas St., Woodstock, on Saturday, November 15 from 1-2 p.m.
The book was published by the Oxford County branch of the CMHA.
