A Ride Don't Hide participant decided to hit the streets a week early this year after learning he needed surgery days before the event.
WOODSTOCK - A local man didn't let a pending surgery stop him from helping CMHA Oxford.
Mark Shulman decided to participate in Ride Don't Hide a week early, after he found out he was due to have surgery for prostate cancer only days before the big event.
Lesa Gunning is the Team Captain for the Gunning Wildlife Rascals Team says he wanted to do his part before going under the knife.
"He has raised to date $755 personally and didn't want to let his supporters down so he committed to doing his ride last Saturday June 16th."
Gunning says he went on a 36.5 kilometre trek with Ride Don't Hide Champion Erica Humphrey.
"John, Denise and I rode the first couple of kilometres with them and then we deeked out and Erica and Mark did 36.5km. We met them back at Upper Thames Brewery with Mark's wife and three kids and we had a celebration."
The Gunning Wildlife Rascals have raised over $2,190 for Ride Don't Hide as of yesterday; leaving them in second place in Oxford County. All of the funds will benefit local mental health services.
The rest of the team will still be participating this Sunday.
Shulman had his surgery on Tuesday. Gunning says it went well and he is now recovering.
