City Council gives Ontario Marihuana Growers approval for zone change at Tecumseh site.
WOODSTOCK -- Woodstock City Council has given the proposed medical marihuana facility on Tecumseh street a greenlight.
The site which is mainly industrial also borders a low density residential area. Council approved a zone change that would allow the site to be used as a Special Transitional Industrial Zone.
The approval marks another step forward for the facility which would become the first in Woodstock. Owner of Ontario Marihuana Growers, Niklas Van Haeren was happy with the result, "I'm excited for it, it's a great building a great business and its a great product and I do think that medical marihuana gives options to those looking for alternative forms of healthcare."
The zone change approval will allow for the beginning of an extensive building renovations to the exisiting facility."We'll start working on the building very shortly starting to clean everything up because the building does need a lot of work and as we apply towards Health Canada we will get some kind of conditional pre-approvals and so that every thing is okay with the application and they are just waiting on a couple of things like security clearances and so on..."
While the production facility is on its way to becoming a growing, distribution and packaging facility for medical marihuana, the company will have to wait for approvals from Health Canada before they can start any sort of production. "There's a great backlog within Health Canada, currently over 1000 applications, although we are really confident about the building and the site as well as what we have put together as far as security and quality assurance requirements...we are expecting nine months to a year."
Van Haeren estimates 150 jobs to be created at the facility.
