Grace Harper says she would fight for the people of Oxford as an Ontario Party MPP.
OXFORD COUNTY - She was a nurse for 45 years and now she's looking to become the next MPP for Oxford County.
Grace Harper is running for the Ontario Party in the Ontario snap election. She lives in Perth-Wellington, but she says Oxford County has always held a special place in her heart.
"My grandfather settled in the Norwich and Burgessville area, his name was John Wade and my mother was Ella Wade. Every year we would come back to visit family and friends, so it's kind of like coming back home."
She decided to enter the political world after hearing a speech by PC Leader Doug Ford on January 29th.
"He spoke about the tariffs but he promised nothing about adding police to secure the borders or addressing the fentanyl crisis, he said nothing about improving healthcare, improving education, or bringing back the workers that were fired. He promised $23 billion in new spending and of course the $200 cheques to buy our votes, so we need to let Mr. Ford know that our votes are not for sale."
If she's elected, she would like the Sovereignty Act implemented in Ontario.
"So The Sovereignty Act is an act that protects Ontario from the federal laws and policies that the legislation deems to be unconstitutional. So it's similar to how we have a king and a queen in the monarchy, but in a The Sovereignty Act it would be a modern democratic sovereign power with the people."
She says she's proud to be a candidate for the Ontario Party because they don't have a whip, so they will always fight for their constituents above all else.
"A whip is when the party says you vote for X, you vote for X. The Ontario Party doesn't have that because they feel the MPPs are to work for the riding and work for the people, and I feel that is a very good change."
Ontarians will head to the polls this Thursday.
