Ontario's Fire Marshal is encouraging everyone to make sure they have working smoke alarms after 133 fire-related deaths were reported in the province in 2022.
ONTARIO - Ontario has recorded its highest number of fire-related deaths in over two decades.
According to Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg, a total of 133 fire-related deaths were recorded throughout the province in 2022.
This includes the four people who were killed in a townhouse fire in Hamilton last week. Two of the victims were children and the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. Pegg says there were no working smoke alarms in the home when the fire broke out.
He says a majority of fire-related deaths happen in homes without working smoke alarms, so he's urging everyone to make sure they have alarms and they are in working order. He says you should also have a well thought out and practiced fire escape plan.
