OPP Advise Drivers To Watch For Motorcycles

Now that the weather is warming up, OPP officers are seeing a rise in the amount of motorcycles on the roads.

WOODSTOCK - As the nicer weather approaches the OPP would like to remind drivers to pay attention to motorcyclists on the road.

Constable Ed Sanchuk tells Heart FM that taking an extra second before pulling into an intersection can save lives.

"We're going to see a higher number of motorcyclists and bicyclists on the roadways. So before entering into an intersection or changing lanes always take an extra second to look both ways and check for other vehicles including motorcycles. Taking an extra second or two can and does save lives."

Sanchuk also says that when driving behind a motorcycle it's best to give them enough room to operate their vehicle safely.

"I would be giving them the distance that they need because in certain cases motorcyclists may be gearing down so you're not seeing their break lights come on. That will make you obviously close the proximity in your distance a lot faster."

Sanchuk recommends things like frequently checking your mirrors, driving defensively and avoiding all distractions to help keep roadways safer for everyone.

He adds that we need to share the road with everybody.

"We need to respect everyone on our roadways. Our pedestrians, our motorcycle operators, our bicyclists and our motor vehicle operators. So when we are out there on the roadway we need to share it."
