Over 40 CASS students got a small taste for what life might be like working 111hrs in a sweatshop.
WOODSTOCK - Over 40 students at C.A.S.S. will be completing the 111 hour challenge for the All's Fair Wear-a-Thon.
Today is the final today of the event that asked participants to wear the same shirt for 111 hours in one week to get a small taste of a regular work day for a sweatshop worker. This is just one of the initiatives attempting to promote the Fair Trade initiative so that one day Woodstock could possibly become a Fair Trade City.
A student of C.A.S.S. who doubles as the Charity Minister for the school participated in the event, and whole-heartedly believes in the message. "I think it is important to raise awareness and funds for this because there is so many people in impoverished situations and they are forced into basically slavery. In these factories they aren't being paid minimum wage they are being paid so much less. It is human cruelty. That is why we need to fight against it."
The Charity Minister details her experience so far and wants to encourage people to get involved. "We're following the hours of a Jordanian sweatshop. It has honestly been enlightening, because when you are doing homework or in school - I think I would still be working in this sweatshop. They're kids who can't even go to school, and I get to experience just a little bit of the cruelty they get to endure."
The student urges the public to take a stand against companies that provide products manufactured in a sweatshop. "We need to start being more aware of where we are buying things from, and who we are buying things from. We have actually over 40 students who are involved in the All's Fair Wear-A-Thon which is more than we have ever had at C.A.S.S. so we are very proud to represent those morals at our high school."
