Warden Larry Martin says the County is working on an affordable housing project for Woodstock seniors and a grant program for those looking to add a secondary affordable housing unit on their property.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council was recently given an update on two new initiatives to help address the housing crisis in Oxford.
The first proposal seeks $1.2 million from the Affordable Housing Reserve to build 30 affordable housing units for seniors in Woodstock. Warden Larry Martin says the County set aside this money in the budget.
"We set aside $1.5 million in reserve for affordable housing and what this was saying is we will spend $1.2 million to get these 30 affordable units up and running but at the same time, instead of shooting the whole wad on one project, we also set aside $300,000 and that is to help supplement and help the people who want to put these additional residential units in their homes and on their properties."
The other proposal is for $300,000 from the reserve to offer grants of up to $15,000 to homeowners seeking to add a secondary housing unit on their property, such as a basement apartment, to be rented out at an affordable rate.
Martin says they are looking at two scales that will address the same issue but look at them in different ways.
