Council approves public works department's provincially mandated energy management plan after a few tweaks.
Oxford County councillors have approved the municipality's energy management plan.
"We're looking at things like electrical savings, gasoline [savings], savings in everyday administration individuals can do like making sure their computers are shut down when they're not using them, things like that," said Robert Walton, the director of the county's public works department.
The plan initially proposed for a minimum of 5 per cent reduction in county administration carbon and electrical use by 2019 but council directed staff to increase the goal to 10 per cent, something Walton says will be a "challenge."
"We'll see how we do. We've got five years to do that."
Walton says part of the challenge is getting staff into the cultural shift of thinking in terms of energy savings.
Under Ontario's Green Energy Act, each municipality is required to have an energy management plan by July 1st.
The plan was approved at a council meeting held on Wednesday.
