Oxford County will be hiring a consultant who will take a look at the homelessness situation in Oxford and find solutions to address it.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is going to hire a consultant in order to research homelessness in our area.
Warden Marcus Ryan says County Council directed staff to start the hiring process earlier this week.
"They would work with all of the other community groups all throughout Oxford that are operating in the spaces of housing, emergency shelter, mental health, and addictions to talk about and learn from those groups what are residents of Oxford experiencing that are preventing them from being housed or preventing them from getting the kind of housing they need."
Warden Ryan says the consultant would report back to staff, who would then bring a report back to council.
"That work then will inform the tens of millions of dollars that we're going to spend in the next decade on housing to make sure we're spending it on the right kind of housing, is it affordable housing, is it rent geared to income housing, is it supportive housing, etc. So we can hopefully not just worry about emergency shelter for people tonight but how do we get that person out of needing emergency shelter tomorrow."
Oxford County Council has a "100% Housed" goal in its current strategic plan.
