After a toddler suffered a terrible burn from a metal grate in Gerogetown, Oxford Public Health is reminding parents to be careful.
Oxford Public Health is reminding parents to be mindful of hot surfaces, especially metal, during the summer.
Earlier this week a toddler from Brampton suffered horrible blisters after stepping on a hot grate at the Georgetown splash pad. Public Health Nurse Lorna Boratto says you really have to be careful around metal when the temperatures get this high.
"Just really important to be aware that metal does heat up and get really, really hot. So wherever the parents are with the children, particularly in the playground situation, to check out how hot it is. If there are still metal playground slides, they can be extremely hot."
Boratto says children's skin can be extremely susceptible to burns. Another thing to watch out for is seatbelts - make sure they never touch the bare skin of a child because it can cause a burn as well.
"The metal parts of the seatbelt or the buckles on child car seats can be very hot and again parents need to be aware of that and make sure they never touch a child's skin. So again checking it out and making sure they have clothing on to cover that or waiting for it to cool down before buckling them in."
