Unionized LCBO staff could be going on strike on Monday if a collective agreement isn’t made between the LCBO and OPSEU.
Plenty of people will be stocking up on booze this weekend as over 7,000 unionized LCBO workers get ready to possibly go on strike.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is looking to improve what they call "quality of life issues" within the LCBO, which mostly revolve around shift schedules. 84 percent of LCBO employees are precarious part time workers with no reasonable path to full time employment.
OPSEU President Warren "Smokey" Thomas tells Heart FM, staff often ends up working solo shifts, because managers receive a bonus if they can cut down on store work hours.
“We don't think there should be a negative reinforcement, we think they should staff the things with what you need, not what the manager can get away with so he can get a bonus"
Thomas says the changes they are asking for should not impact the LCBO financially.
"The things we are asking for, in all honesty, would cost the employer nothing in most cases, or such a minimal amount of money it would be like a drop in the ocean"
If the OPSEU and the LCBO come to a collective agreement this weekend, it would stop the strike.
