Production of the Toyota Corolla will be moving to Mexico - but this doesn't signal the beginning of the end for the Cambridge factory.
CAMBRIDGE - Toyota Corolla production is moving south.
Toyota announced yesterday that after more than 30 years in Cambridge, production of one of its best selling cars will be moving to a new factory in Mexico, though it will also continue to be made in an existing factory in Mississippi.
The Cambridge factory will not be eliminated however - the current plan is to switch production to higher value, mid-sized SUVs.
Toyota also plans on investing in a third assembly line next their current plant in China.
A Toyota executive has said Mexico and China were chosen because they are two markets where auto demand is expected to rise in coming years.
Toyota has stated the RAV 4 will continue to be built in the Woodstock plant.
